Allergy Friendly Foods
I received a very exciting package in the mail from Allergy Friendly Foods the other day containing a whole lot of gluten free goodies from US based companies. You see Allergy Friendly Foods import foods for specialty diets (they cater for casein free, dairy free, egg free, fish & shellfish free, gluten free, nut free, protein free, rice free, soy free, wheat free and kosher and vegan diets). Now I know you are thinking well what on earth is in their products and there is no way that they can taste good, but trust me, the products I sampled were delicious! As always I had my team of non-gluten intolerant eaters test everything as well just to prove I still know what good food tastes like!
My goodies from Allergy Friendly Foods My goodies from Allergy Friendly FoodsThe first product I tried was a Snickerdoodle cookie from Enjoy Life. I had never heard of Snickerdoodle cookies before but through some research I have completed it seems that they are quite common in the US. I just wanted to try them because of their name (oh and also because I love cinnamon, which is one of the ingredients). As soon as I opened the packet the aroma got my taste buds watering. The cookies which are soft baked I would describe as a cross between gingernut cookies and cookie dough. They were absolutely delicious! My work colleague gave the cookie the thumbs up too! It’s a shame there were only two (there are bigger packs available!) and they were quite small however the good news is that because of Allergy Friendly Foods the cookies are now available in a number of shops in Australia (check here for stockists).
Gluten free snickerdoodle cookies Gluten free snickerdoodle cookiesNext up I tried the Surf Sweets Jelly Beans. Finding gluten free lollies is actually quite hard as most brands use wheat starch. Jelly Beans are even harder to find gluten free and so I was very excited to try these. Because it was snack size I have to admit that I didn’t actually share any of these, however I can say that they were very yummy! Even better the Jelly Beans (like all of Surf Sweets lollies) are natural, that’s right no nasties!
Surf Sweets Jellybeans Surf Sweets JellybeansI was very intrigued to try Enjoy Life’s no-oats “oatmeal” cookies. One thing that is very frustrating when going gluten free is not being able to eat oats! These cookies use brown rice flakes instead of oats and while I haven’t eaten oats for almost two years I was told that the cookies kind of taste like they have oats in them. Either way, like the snickerdoodle cookies, the cookies are soft and delicious with the raisins and cinnamon.
no-oats oatmeal biscuits no-oats oatmeal biscuitsNext up was the cinnamon crunch granola, also from Enjoy Life. This granola is made from brown rice and it contains raisins and cinnamon and vanilla. You will be happy to know that this cereal also doesn’t contain any nasties, however it is highly addictive and I had to try very hard to stop myself eating the entire packet in one sitting! My Mum also loved it (there’s the non coeliac opinion again!).
Enjoy Life Cinnamon Crunch Granola Enjoy Life Cinnamon Crunch GranolaI also received a mix of Miss Roben’s Hint of Honey Cookie Mix and a couple of DariFree sachets but I am going to review them in separate posts so stay tuned!Go and check out Allergy Friendly Foods‘ website for all the other products they import and where to buy them in Australia. Before I sign off on this post, while I am speaking of US products it seems appropriate to announce some news. On the 19th June I will be heading off to the US to work in a summer camp for two months. After this I will travel the West Coast for a month before flying to Canada to work the ski season. My travels wont stop here as I plan to work and travel in the UK and Europe also. All up I imagine I will be gone for a couple of years. But don’t stress! I plan to keep blogging, with a number of drafts yet still to be published about Australian products and restaurants. You can then follow me as I blog about eating gluten free around the world.
