Magpie & Stump, Banff
Another (reasonably) gluten free friendly option in Banff is Magpie & Stump. I had wanted to try out their menu ever since going there for a few drinks one night. The interior is very well done and it has a great atmosphere. If you go just for drinks you get to de-shell peanuts on the ground (who doesn’t love making a mess when it’s not in their own house!).However I must say I was a little dissapointed when I visited for dinner as I had seen online that they had a gluten free menu but it turns out they no longer have this due to cross contamination issues etc.Anyway after a little discussion with the waitress we worked out one of the safest meals for me to have (all ingredients are gluten free) was the enchiladas. I decided on the beef and onion ones. The enchiladas come with refried beans, spanish rice, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and salsa so it is definately a good sized meal! You can also order japapenos and/or mel’s red death sauce to make the meals hotter (all meals are served mild otherwise). The meal was good, though not the best Mexican I have had (I did spend a week in San Diego last year). The beef and onion enchiladaOh and cannot forgot to mention their drinks – they have a rather large cocktail menu which makes it hard to decide what you want. All flavours can be served with tequilla (marguarita), vodka (can’t remember what these ones are!) or rum (daiquiri). I choose the lychee marguarita on the rocks which was nice but I would have preferred a stronger lychee flavour and at least one whole lychee. Every cocktail is served out of a jam jar which is pretty cool!Lychee marguaritaThe Magpie & Stump is worth checking out for the decor and atmosphere. You can find it at 203 Caribou Street, Banff with more information here.
