Gluten free friendly supermarkets, USA and Canada
I have to admit I didn’t do a huge amount of cooking whilst I was in the US. For the first two months, while working at a summer camp, all of my meals were cooked for me. Then I started traveling and since I wasn’t staying in one place for more than four nights there wasn’t much point stocking up on supermarket items. While in the US I came across two chains of supermarkets which are awesome for those that have dietary requirements including vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free. Those supermarkets are Trader Joe’s and Wholefoods. Both supermarkets label items that are Gluten free and have Gluten free sections, however Trader Joe’s goes one step further and have guides for each dietary Requirement listing what foods in the store are safe to eat for that specific dietary requirement. You can Check out these on their website here. The great thing about Wholefoods supermarkets is there is a lot of prepared foods including soups, a salad bar, pre-made salad and often an international food section. Cutlery from Wholefoods They also change this food based on what time of day it is. For example I went in to Wholefoods in West Hollywood around Breakfast time and got myself a egg white omelette. All of their Gluten free items are labelled and there are plenty of options. Egg white omelette (with plain egg whites and capsicum and onion)Since being in Canada I have come across another great chain of supermarkets, Nesters. Like Wholefoods and Trader Joe’s, Nesters label all their gluten free options and they have plenty of them.
